Chariots of Fire- Jerusalem

Uploaded by: RyanGolddRedux
Video Description:
Chariots of Fire is a British film released in 1981. Written by Colin Welland and directed by Hugh Hudson, it is based on the true story of British athletes preparing for and competing in the 1924 Summer Olympics. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture.
The title is a quotation from the hymn Jerusalem which is a setting of a poem by William Blake.
The text is as follows:
And did those feet in ancient time
walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
on England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant Land.

Thank you for posting this! It's maybe the most poignant scene in this classic movie. I love it. I remember this from when I was a kid! I remember I didn't quite understand the movie poster with the men in white apparently running-and I didn't understand about the Olympics. I certainly know what those great men achieved NOW. :)

I believe it is based on a legend that Jesus Christ once traveled as far as England-thus the versus from the song:
"And did Those Feet in Ancient Time Walk Upon England's Mountains Green? And was the Holy Lamb of God on England's pleasant pastures seen?"

Something about ... ( 6 months ago by schneller79)
Something about this movie version I always found to be so unique and moving. For example, the higher pitch of the choir at "of burning gold, etc" as the old runners are talking. Then again at "I will not cease from mental fight..." I've loved this piece since I first saw the movie as a child in the early 80s. Thanks for posting it!

I have loved this rendition ever since I first saw the movie as a child in the early 80s. I was always disappointed that the soundtrack version is different. In this version from the movie, the choir sings a much higher pitch at "bring me my bow of burning gold" (as the old runners chat) and again at "I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand". Beautiful!
